Neural lace (smart dust perfusion)

Smart Dust Perfusion (3R) {13R/10L}: This neural lace is exclusive to NeuraLink. It is made of billions of nancomputers that are injected into the cerebrospinal fluid and magnetically guided through the brain. Smart Dust has extraordinary resolution when reading brain activity but relatively low resolution in modifying it because the motes do not have the energy or computational power to do stimulate neurons. It can effortlessly read subtle thoughts, sensations, and emotions, but produces vague AR and VR experiences at best. Emotions and other qualia feel like they are being imposed, not coming from within. This limited resolution is addressed by pairing it with an implanted AR interface or external AR interface. Note: Limitation costs must be paid even though the refresh costs do not accrue to the character refresh calculations.

  • Cost {6L}: This is a complex procedure that causes 6FS to pay for. If this stress is taken as a consequence use Significant Debt: Unless a HF is active, paying off this debt must include in game narrative action.
  • Vulnerable to concussions {2L}: Any physical stress that involves accelerating the head causes +2PS or +2MS (treated as attacks). Consequences taken from this damage are "Concussed: With each invocation of this consequence choose from one of the following effects: loss of concentration, disorientation, dizziness, nausea, confusion, sleepiness, or loss of coordination."
  • Magnetic Disruption {2L}: Vulnerable to strong (1T+) magnetic fields disrupt or damage the lace causing +2MS or +2PS (treated as attacks). Consequences taken from this damage are "Concussed: With each invocation of this consequence choose from one of the following effects: loss of concentration, disorientation, dizziness, nausea, confusion, sleepiness, or loss of coordination."
  • Enhanced Ability {3R}: +3 to any one IRL action once per session.
  • Metamancy Bonus {6R}: Dedicate +1 to up to 3 approaches when using metamancy (e.g., +1 Forceful +2 Flashy, or +3Quick). Metamantic actions may have indirect physical effects (a separate roll), but can not directly cause physical stress or consequences associated with physical stress. Cumulative with AR interface bonuses.

Installation

The smart dust motes are installed by a cervical spinal tap which delivers them into the cerebrospinal fluid over the course of 12h of induced sleep. A magnetic helmet coaxes the motes to diffuse through the brain during these hours.

Specifications

The bonded AI provides the secure interface from the lace to the person's phone, which runs their lace AI assistant. It is usually housed in an external fashionable mount such as a torc or a cap. It operates on battery power for 24h before needing to inductively recharge. It can exert powerful influences on the brain, altering cognitive capacities through intracranial magnetic stimulation and some trickle current. A relatively powerful AI is required to interpolate the readings in a useful manner, and provide standard APIs to allow interfaces to external systems.

Each mote attaches to a neuron and generates a radio pulse when the neuron fires. These signals are very weak, so they are retransmitted through the mesh network out toward the skull. A nanowire perfusion on the interior of the skull reads these signals. A nanowire mesh is installed outside the skull to provide a faraday cage, isolating the brain from external electromagnetic noise.

The smart dust motes are powered by glucose. Motes have an operational half-life of 20 years. In practice this means having your motes replenished at least once per year. After two years the quality of the interface falls from Very Good to Good. After three years it falls to Low Resolution BCI. In the 5th year the normal repair and maintenance capabilities of the brain can not keep up with the rate of decay, and the character will begin to show degradation of brain function similar to Alzheimer's disease. In the 6th year the perfusion is effectively broken.

The added mass of the smart dust has a side effect: they increase the person's vulnerability to concussion and increase the damage that results from a concussion. The additional inertia from the mote on each neuron is not large, but it is large enough. Neck pain is also associated with the heavier head.
