Neural lace (prefabricated mesh)

Prefabricated Mesh (1R) {7R/6L}: This neural lace is a prefabricated mesh of nanowires designed to exactly match the folds and shapes of the brain. It is installed over the surface of the brain. This provides extreme surface sensitivity and permits interpolated imaging into deep structures, but it is a low-resolution brain-computer interface (BCI). It can read obvious thoughts, sensations, and emotions but produces vague AR and VR objects at best. Emotions and other qualia feel like they are being imposed, not coming from within. This limited resolution is addressed by pairing it with an implanted AR interface. Note: Limitation costs must be paid even though the refresh costs do not accrue to the character refresh calculations.

  • Cost {2L}: This is a significant procedure that causes 2FS to pay for. If this stress is taken as a consequence use Debt: Unless a HF is active, paying off this debt must include in game narrative action.
  • Enhanced Ability {2R/2L}: +2 to any one IRL action. The strain this imposes on the brain results in 2PS or 2MS with each use.
  • Hacker Bonus {4R}: +2 when [approachily] Hacking (attack, defend, overcome, or aspect). Cumulative with AR interface bonuses.
  • +1DR vs kinetic attacks to the head, from eyebrows to occipital ridge and ear to ear. {1R}
  • Magnetic Disruption {2L}: Vulnerable to strong (1T+) magnetic fields disrupt or damage the lace causing +2MS or +2PS (treated as attacks). Installation

This procedure poses no risk of brain damage even though it requires much of the skull to be removed and replaced. The surgery takes four hours, requires a bald head, and a skull cast while the bone heals to the new titanium skull cap. Integration training can begin immediately.

Specifications

The bonded AI provides the secure interface from the lace to the person's phone, which runs their lace AI assistant. It is usually housed in a modular computer built into the skull, with a standard port under the hair. The bonded AI is installed under the scalp, in the new titanium skull cap. It operates on battery power for 24h before needing to inductively recharge (often via an e-pillow). It can exert powerful influences on the brain, altering cognitive capacities through intracranial magnetic stimulation and some trickle current. A relatively powerful AI is required to interpolate the readings in a useful manner, and provide standard APIs to allow interfaces to external systems.

A nanowire mesh is installed outside the skull to provide a faraday cage, isolating the brain from external electromagnetic noise.
