Neural lace (nanowire perfusion)

Nanowire Perfusion (2R) {9R/7L}: This neural lace is about 1 million filaments that are woven into a three dimensional lattice of wires that can electrically and magnetically stimulate read neuronal activity at good resolution. The sensorium created by this lace cartoonish and simulated, but very effective. The assistant AI can often read the person's ideas and intentions through the bonded AI interfaces. Using words-in-the-head and emotional cues is effortless. Visualizations are complex and detailed, though not completely realistic. Fine details (such as 14pt text at arms length) can be produced. In rare cases an internal AR is installed to increase the quality of the visual and auditory sensorium, but this is usually not worth the effort and expense. A pair of standard AR contacts is a cheaper and equally effective solution. Note: Limitation costs must be paid even though the refresh costs do not accrue to the character refresh calculations.

Installation

This procedure is arthroscopic, going up through the joint between the skull and the c1 vertebra. Installation is controlled by sonomagnetic calipers that guide each wire around brain cells on a relatively straight path. Each wire is installed in 0.1 seconds, so the complete procedure takes about 28h. This process stresses the brain much like a serious concussion. The patient must be sedated and held in a medically induced hypothermic state throughout the operation, and is fed a cocktail of immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory drugs to limit concussion damage. Integration training begins after a few days of recovery time, when the brain returns to normal.

Specifications

The bonded AI provides the secure interface from the lace to the person's phone, which runs their lace AI assistant. It is usually housed in an external fashionable mount such as a torc or a cap. It operates on battery power for 24h before needing to inductively recharge. It can exert powerful influences on the brain, altering cognitive capacities through intracranial magnetic stimulation and some trickle current. In some cases access to information stored in the AI or online is nearly as seamless as natural recall. A relatively powerful AI is required to interpolate the readings in a useful manner, and provide standard APIs to allow interfaces to external systems.

The addition of the nanowires strengthens the brain structure, making it significantly more resistant to concussions. A nanowire mesh is installed outside the skull to provide a faraday cage, isolating the brain from external electromagnetic noise.
