Neural lace

A neural lace is a mesh of tiny wires surrounding and permeating the brain. An ideal neural lace has a resolution of at least 1 sensor/stimulator to one neuron (1:1). The lace is controlled by a bonded AI, which translates the human's neural activity into standard APIs and protocols. These are available to authorized Assistant AIs that provide a consciously accessed interface to the capabilities of the lace.

Installation

The process of installation varies depending on the nature of the lace installed. While planning is a collaboration between a team of highly skilled neuroscientists and a neurosurgical AI, the actual surgery is fully controlled by the neuroAI. Post surgical integration training begins immediately and takes a minimum of several days to activate core APIs.

In general a failed roll means "success at Major cost" and often includes mental or physical stress to the team or the patient.

Summary

In cases where stress is taken the minimum damage is 1 point - even on a tied roll.

Practice

Unlike the other steps, practice is ongoing. After the lace is installed the player is not at all proficient. This is represented by a Disadvantage on each Approach. This disadvantage can be compelled by the GR on any roll the player makes (player receives a fate point). The text below can be copied into the Aspects section of the character form. In effect, the character can not use their lace to enhance an approach until they have practiced enough to remove the disadvantage. For new characters created with a lace the practice was completed before the game begins. A starting character can gain 1R by taking 2 of these limitations:

A personal instructor can provide a +2 bonus in this scenario by spending a fate point. Trainers normally have 3 refresh and 3 fate points. The player may need to arrange for a significant number of advantages to remove some of these disadvantages. The neural lace enhancement can not be invoked to improve the roll to overcome the disadvantage, but it can be used to create advantages.

With extensive additional training, the person may develop additional expertise in using their lace. This is an attempt to create an advantage, with no approach bonuses on this roll. Success often requires a lot of help, advantages prepared, and fate points to burn.

Installation - General Process

Installation requires a lot to go right, so there are a lot of rolls to make. Each roll is described in terms of the Stunt that the installation team uses. The GR determines the bonuses granted to the team (their Approach scores). Situational modifiers may create advantages or disadvantages at any stage of the process. Guidelines for consequences of a failed roll are noted with each step. See the Installation Summary table above for a list of all rolls.

All rolls for the surgical team are Stunt rolls for standard procedures, so they get +2 and their Approach bonus. Experimental procedures can be attempted without the Stunt bonus.

Preparation

1. Scan and Map

The surgical team Carefully scans and maps the brain. Negative results are appied as mental damage to the surgical and must be absorbed as stress or consequences. A result worse than Terrible usually means calling off the procedure, or repeating this step.

2. Plan Installation

The surgical team Cleverly plan the installation. Negative results are considered mental damage to the surgical team and must be absorbed as stress or consequences. A result worse than Terrible usually means calling off the procedure, or repeating this step. Takes 6h.

3. Program the Installation

The surgical team Carefully program the installation. Negative results are considered mental damage to the surgical team and must be absorbed as stress or consequences. A result worse than Terrible usually means calling off the procedure, or repeating this step. Takes 6h.

Installation

4. Prepare the Patient

The surgical team Quickly prep the patient. Negative results cause physical damage to the patient. A result worse than Terrible usually means calling off the procedure. This step can be repeated the following day. Takes 1h.

5. Install The Upgrades

The surgical team installs the various components that make up the completed lace. Negative results are physical damage that must be absorbed by the patient as stress or consequences. Complete failure indicates brain damage, a defective lace, or both. This step can not be repeated. Time varies by procedure. Some laces require many separate installation rolls.

Removal of a defective or outdated lace is a scenario for the GR and players to establish.

6. Recovery

The surgical team Carefully help the patient recover. A result worse than Terrible may mean a drastically extended recovery time, infection, immune rejection of the implants, or other consequences. Negative results are physical damage that must be absorbed by the patient as stress or consequences.

Integration

7. Testing

The surgical team and patient both work to find and eliminate bugs and problems from the installation. Failures leave the patient with a lace that is vulnerable to errors and hacking, until the bugs are fixed.

8. Training

Then the patient trains the system and themselves until the patient makes two Careful and two Clever rolls. Each roll represents 24h of training.

9. Securing

The patient and surgical team attempt to create three new Aspects for the patient.

10. Practice

The patient has a performance disadvantage to overcome in each Approach before they are competent to use the system. It can take weeks to practice away disadvantages in approaches with low bonuses. With significant additiional practice the patient may develop expertise in the use of the lace, providing additional bonuses or new aspects to use to twist fate.

Technologies

Some combination of technologies are used to create a network of sensors and stimulators within the brain. Nanowires are run through the body as well to provide contactless data-access regions in the hands, feet, and in areas where a phone is likely to be pocketed. A 'bonded AI' learns the language of the brain it is working with, and is permanently associated with that person. The bonded AI core does not provide an intelligent interface to the human it lives with. It's purpose is to interpret that brain's behaviours into a standard set of protocols and APIs. Bonded AIs are often installed under the scalp at the back of the skull, in a standard form-factor card-computer slot - credit card sized and curved (85.60 mm × 53.98 mm x 2mm). It can be easily concealed with hair, and replacement does not require surgery. An assistant AI provides the consciously activated interface to the functions and features of the lace. Assistant AIs are usually housed in a phone or tablet form factor, and may have a significant cloud computing infrastructure to draw on. The Assistant AI has access only to the bonded AI, not directly to the lace.

Nanowire Mesh

A network of nanowires are installed arthroscopically over the surface of the brain. This provides extreme surface sensitivity and permits interpolated imaging into deep structures. A nanowire mesh is installed outside the skull to provide a faraday cage, isolating the brain from external electromagnetic noise.

Unlike the prefabricated mesh, this installation is arthroscopic, and effectively non-invasive. Because of the relatively low resolution any sensorium created by this lace is obviously simulated. The person can converse with an Assistant AI using words-in-the-head and emotional queues, but visualization are simple and low in detail - no readable text, for example. An internal AR is installed instead, monitoring and modifying all nerves transmitting to and from the brain. This allows for complete sensory overlay and override, as well as computer assisted control of the body.

The bonded AI can exert powerful influences on the brain, altering cognitive capacities through intercranial magnetic stimulation. A relatively powerful AI is required to interpolate the readings in a useful manner.

Like the prefabricated mesh, this procedure poses minimal risk of brain damage. The surgery usually takes less than an hour, and the person can begin integration training immediately.

The bonded AI is usually not installed in the body with this procedure. It is housed in an external computer with a tablet or phone form factor.

Though this lace requires the most grossly invasive surgery, it is least invasive to brain tissues, with minimal risk of brain damage. Because of the low resolution, the sensorium created by this lace is obviously simulated. The person can converse with an Assistant AI using words-in-the-head and emotional queues, but visualization are simple and lack detail. Simple text can be produced, for example. An internal AR is installed instead, monitoring and modifying all nerves transmitting to and from the brain. This allows for complete sensory overlay and override, as well as computer assisted control of the body.

Nanowire Perfusion

About 1 million filaments are woven into the structure of the brain over the course of about 28 hours (10/s). This procedure is arthroscopic, going up through the joint between the skull and the c1 vertebra. The end result is a three dimensional lattice of wires that can electrically and magnetically stimulate read neuronal activity at high resolution.

Because of the good resolution, the sensorium created by this lace is not obviously simultated, but there are signs. The assistant AI can often read the person's ideas and intentions through the bonded AI interfaces. Using words-in-the-head and emotional cues is effortless. Visualizations are complex and detailed, though not completely realistic. Fine details (such as 14pt text at arms length) can be produced. In rare cases an internal AR is installed to increase the quality of the visual and auditory sensorium, but this is usually not worth the effort and expense.

The bonded AI can exert powerful and focussed influences on the brain, altering cognitive capacities through intercranial magnetic stimulation. In some cases access to information stored in the AI or online is nearly as seamless as natural recall.

Installation is controlled by sonomagnetic calipers that guide each wire around brain cells on a relatively straight path. Each wire is installed in 0.1 seconds. This process does stress the brain much like a serious concussion. The patient must be sedated and held in a medically induced hypothermic state throughout the operation, and fed a cocktail of immunosuppressant drugs to limit inflammation responses.

After a few days of recovery time the brain returns to normal with minimal lingering side effects. The addition of the nanowires strengthens the brain structure, making it significantly more resistant to concussions.

Smart Dust Perfusion

Exclusive to NeuraLace. Cost: Ƀ1.

Billions of nancomputers are injected into the cerebrospinal fluid, and are then magnetically guided through the brain. Each speck attaches to a neuron and generates a radio pulse when the neuron fires. These signals are retransmitted through the mesh network, out toward the skull. The devices are powered by glucose. These signals are too weak to be read outside the skull, so a nanowire perfusion is required across the interior of the skull to serve as a radio sensor for transmitted neural activity and to provide intracranial magnetic stimulation. The combination is quite effective at fine tuning the magnetic stimulation to be most effective.

Smart Dust is in contact with almost every neuron, but the motes do not stimulate neurons. The computers do not have the energy or computational power to do so. An internal AR interface is often installed to provide a finer grain sensorium.

The added mass of the smart dust has a side effect. It increases the person's vulnerability to concussion and increases the damage that results from a concussion. The additional inertia from the mote on each neuron is not large, but it is large enough.

Motes have an operational half-life of 20 years. In practice this means having your motes replenished at least once per year. After two years the quality of the interface falls from Very Good to Good. After three years it falls to Low Resolution BCI. In the 5th year the normal repair and maintenance capabilities of the brain can not keep up with the rate of decay, and the character will begin to show degredation of brain function similar to Alzheimer's disease. In the 6th year the perfusion is effectively broken.

Optogenetic Smart Dust

Exclusive to NeuraLace. Developed on Tuesday March 6th, 2034 in partnership with CAF's Chief Science Officer, Willow Rosenberg. Available for bespoke experimental installation after 2034-03-11. Cost: Ƀ5.

The problem with Smart Dust is the inability to directly alter the functioning of the dusted neurons. Optogenetic treatment alters the brain to turn it essentially transparent. As part of this change the neurons generate a tuned light pulse when they fire. The billions of nancomputers are injected into the cerebrospinal fluid, and are then magnetically guided through the brain. The Optodust has two components:

  • Optodust that produces a network of sensor and command motes that detect the firing of up to 100 neurons and form a powerful bonded AI neural network within the brain.
  • Stimdust that attaches to almost every neuron with the capacity to cause them to fire or not.

The combination provides incredibly fine grained control of the brain, with a full map of the neural stucture.

The process of genetic transformation is fraught with peril and is usually fatal. Installing the lace requires several additional rolls. It is advisable to create as many advantages as possible before this process is started, especially for characters with low Forceful scores.

  • Design Genetic Transformation (+7 Epic Difficulty): The surgical team gets +2 to Cleverly design the genetic transformation program. The character can spend a Fate Point at this stage and claim 'Cold Feet' to precent the installation from proceeding. For an additional fee, the design can be repeated, potentially with better results. Negative results are considered mental stress to the sugical team, and must be absorbed as stress or consequences. If the flawed design is implemented, the patient must pick a neurodegenerative disease and roll for it the way you roll for cancer with other genetic changes.

The added mass of the smart dust has one other side effect. It increases the person's vulnerability to concussion and increases the damage that results from a concussion. The additional inertia from the mote on each neuron is not large, but it is large enough.

Intrinsic Lace

This lace is part of the biological structure of the organism. As the the creature grows, it's brain produces transparent neurons that are photosensitive. A symbiotic bacterial colony with the characteristics of optodust use modified glial cells to create a somewhat separate paralel computer inside the brain. This bonded AI communicates with the 'natural' brain with pulses of light that modify action potentials, firing rates, hormone levels, and so on. The colony is itself encoded in the genetic structure of the host, so normal reproduction and gestation will result in colonization. Removal of the colony requires significant gene witchery.

In addition to the symbiotic colony, a faraday cage is grown on the interior surfaces of the skull and spine (including soft tissue). A biological radio antenna grows between the scalp and skull and along the exterior of the spine. The physical connection from brain to antenna can be interrupted at will. The antenna can transmit at GB/s rates up to 10m in ideal conditions. All transmissions are signed by a private key embedded in a new organelle in every cell, and can be decrypted/authenticated by a pheromone issued by the sender. This provides authentication, but not security, and requires sender and receiver to have been able to smell each other within the last year.

Security

Because neural laces offer direct access to the brain and can often modify the brain's operation, they are designed with security in mind. RF shielding under the scalp is one small part of this.

APIs that alter physiological factors are isolated and separately secured, requiring a second hack at difficulty 8 to gain unauthorized access.

After installation the character has a bunch of new aspects associated with the lace. The specific set of aspects depends on how the installation went and how much practice the character has with the lace.
