You are living a normal life in [town/city], working as a [profession] at [institution]. Day to day life on March 1st, 2034 is much like it was back in 2017. Individually, people still go to work every day, raise families, and so on. There have been some big geopolitical changes, for better and for worse, of course. The environment continues to lurch toward heat death and the Mediterranean is still a seething pit of ideological warfare. Personal transportation is mostly autonomous now. Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have largely replaced phones, providing real-time translations and constant internet access. Geneneering has really hit its stride.

And then came The Arrival: Tetras began to appear out of thin air at local noon, starting just off the coast of Australia. Twenty three hours later New Zealanders were among the last people to welcome Earth's alien... visitors? Invaders?

How To Create a Character

Get Started Now.

This wiki contains everything you need to know and do to Create a Character in the Discovered Universe (DU), including relevant Fate Accelerated Edition (FAE)[1] rules and background information about the Discovered Universe (DU). As the game is played, this wiki will add events, characters, and other elements of the game universe.

You won't find the full FAE rules here - just the remixed ones you need to be able to build a good character.

You need an account to edit because much of the live and textual gameplay happens in Slack, and we need to make you a profile at Discovered-RPG.Slack.com[2].

Game Mechanics

Game Mechanics cover four areas: Rules, World Building, Character Types, and How to Play.

Rules

Many pages described rules. A few are important for a consistent universe.

Teams are a big deal when you are running an MNC. The team rules take some rolls, but they work.

Weapons cover some of the more amazing things destructotools can do, such as piercing armour, hiding, blowing up, or finding the target all on their own.

World Aspects are not 'rules' per se, but they kinda fit from a gameplay perspective.

Other Rules

  • Creating a permanent aspect for another character or team is DC-6. This can be resisted as per Overcome rules of FAE.

World Building

Many Game Mechanics are expressed as World Aspects associated with one or more World Notes. Together these provide actionable aspects of the world in 2034, set in a narrative context for the game. Some World Aspects were created by the GR to create the setting for the game. Many are the result of discussions while creating a character.

Character Types

There are several types of characters in the DU:

How To Play

The DU is constructed on two online platforms:

  • Slack for discussions and file sharing;
  • MediaWiki for developing and recording the ongoing narrative (that's this site).

To become a player/creator you'll need to create an account on this site, make a first pass at creating a character, and have the Sysop make you a Slack account. Game play may be live sessions using video-conferencing, or textual interactions over Slack.

How To Edit Wiki Pages

Most of the pages of this wiki are created and edited using Special:Forms. The How To Edit Wiki Pages page has a list of forms.

Timelines and Narrative Continuity

The past and future history of the DU is co-created by the Players and GameRunner. It is extensively documented on the Timeline.

A large part of the role of a GR is to maintain continuity within the universe. This narrative history is also documented through pages on this site - especially Events, Characters and World Aspects. During and after play, Events are added to the wiki, Character pages are updated, and world aspects are adjusted.

Characters and Players

The Category:Characters and Category:Players pages contain dynamically generated lists of participants in the game. (Entities are a type of character so they don't have a category page.) Each type of character has an additional categorization: PC, NPC, PE, or NPE.

Most characters are directed by a single player until the character dies or retires from the narrative. Some characters may be directed by more than one player, or could be temporarily taken over by a GameRunner.

Stories

The adventures created by the Players and Gamerunners are freely available to anyone who wants to be an Author.
