Backstory

The Directed Quantum Evolutionists (DQE) surfaced several years ago as an shadowy, edgy group with two primary goals:

1) to move the transhumanism movement from philosophy and rhetoric to practical, measurable and meaningful changes in worldwide human will, unconstrained by borders, political structures, and the 'loadstones of archaic ethical constructs" and

2) to directly uplift humans from the current shackles of their 'arbitrary dna combinations' with bleeding edge science and real examples of progress.

Their bold promises has attracted a great delta of followers in the last few years, especially with the ascension of a shadowy but highly charismatic leader named Meridian that already was infamous in the "VRGames" - a virtual death sport that is the most popular VR watched sport. While all VR games are spectator sports now, none have had the popularity of the V games, largely attributed to the extremely high prize pools, super fast death rate, and the "ultra permadeath" feature, meaning players that die are permanently banned from ever playing again. Meridian is one of the few characters that has ever remained completely anonymous, even after achieving the title 'sole survivor' 3 consequence times, collecting the ultimate prize pool of $100,000,000 USD each time, and then retiring. No one else has won more than once.

The character was female, but it's unknown whether played by a a male or female IRL (it's common to have gender mismatch). On her third victory and shocking retirement, Meridian used the platform to promote a new transhumanist group called the DQE. They are very appealing to the target audience for the VRG. She dedicated $80M of her prize money to fund the Directed Quantum Evolutionists, $10M to the Church of the Transhuman (CotTH), and $1M to each of several other Transhumanist groups. Meridian is a controvertial figure in the community, given that several of these organizations have denouced each other over their divergent or conflicting views of what humans should transform into.

Meridian is suspected to have a seat in the DQE executive council. She has an open invitation back to compete at any time in any future tournament.

Another way that this group has attracted a large mass of followers, donors, and powerful open proponents is that they have already produced a dozen "miracles" over the last few years. They will select, apparently at random, a horrible, emotionally evoking genetic ailment and "cure it". Like any church, the demonstration of miracles is significant, and - until the DQE - an absent motivational tool. These powerful displays of not just generosity, but also concrete evidence of their ability to execute on the second of their primary goals. Unilateral and non-consentual genetic therapy is more tha a little controvertial, and there are warrants for the arrest of the leadership of the organization.

Proof of their power, sincerity, and ability has attracted even greater numbers of loyalists, while creating enormous pressure on many governments to change existing laws to allow faster development and implementation of genetic enhancement techologies.

All attempts so far to uncover the leadership behind this group had been unsuccessful - despite the clear implication of powerful leadership, organisation, and the presence of high powered scientific tools and minds, and security obfuscation that is clearly involved. All that is known is the leader goes by the name 'Tardigrade'. They have also been implicated (although it's possible that this is a smear tactic) to have a large private militarist element, and have been implicated in corporate espionage and theft of science and technology to increase their ability to execute their plans. Meridian's abilities in the VRGames alone provides proof that they would be capable of this.
